VirtualBox OSE

Last update: Feb. 4, 2008

Since innotek didn’t release VirtualBox for Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) and we don’t know when it will be available, I decided to distribute OSE (Open Source Edition) here. (* innotek released Beta 3 on Feb. 6) You can download it from the following link. Please be sure it’s for Leopard only and Beta version. Use it at your own risk.

VirtualBoxOSE155pre1.dmg (10.6MB)

The file includes VirtualBox OSE (pre-1.5.5) package and uninstaller tool.

Installation

If you already installed innotek’s Beta2, copy VBoxGuestAdditions.iso file in VirtualBox.app/Contents/MacOS and uninstall Beta2 on Leopard. Double-click the VirtualBox OSE.pkg in the disk image and the installation process will start.

Usage

After installing OSE you will see “VirtualBoxOSE” app. in Applications folder. You can get the manual from innotek’s site (www.virtualbox.org). While you can use disk image file (vdi) which is used with innotek’s Beta, I recommend you not to use old setting files.

This package doesn’t include Guest Additions. Get it from somewhere, that is, Windows version, Mac Beta and so on.

Uninstallation

Double-click the “Uninstall.tool” in the disk image.

Notes:

  • If you can’t boot your guest OS, try PIIX3 IDE controller setting.
  • Using Guest Additions in VBox 1.5 for Windows distribution, you can use “Seamless Mode”.
  • Perhaps Shared Folder doesn’t work (limitation of OSE?).
  • Exchanging files between OS X and guest OS without NAS or another Mac/PC:
I found a way to do that. Using “floppy disk image” we can exchange small file (1MB or so).
In “Disk Utility” create empty disk image with:
    size: 1440KB
    partition: none
    file system: MSODS (FAT)
You can format the floppy from guest OS, of course. The disk image you created can be read/written by both Finder and guest OS.
In VirtualBox you want to mount the file as floppy disk image. In Finder just double-click the file. I think it’s better not to mount the file at the same time.
