Glest 3.2

Last updated: Apr. 5 2009
Glest is a 3D real time strategy game with beautiful graphics and sounds. Please see glest.org for details.
I ported Glest 3.2 to Mac OS X and packed it for ordinary users. That is, you don’t need any other libraries or data.
Download
Before downloading files, You should meet the following conditions to install Glest.
- CPU: Intel or PowerPC (G4 or above)
- OS: Mac OS X 10.4 or later
- Disk space: about 120MB
If you are new to Glest, at first download the Glest32App.dmg and try running GlestConf. It will check the version of OpenGL and judge whether Glest will work or not on your Mac.
Even if you already installed Glest 3.1, you want to download the both files.
- Glest32App.dmg (4.9MB)
- Glest32Data.pkg.zip (65.9MB)
Glest32App.mpkg in Glest32App.dmg will install the following programs into /Applications/Glest folder.
Glest Ver. 3.2.2r1 (Universal binary)
GlestConf Ver. 1.2.1 (Universal binary)
You don’t need to uninstall the previous version. The installer will replace it. If you want to keep settings (glest.ini) or maps you installed, then back up them before you install Glest 3.2. After installed, you need to replace new glest.ini with older one. Be sure you need to run GlestConf before running Glest. In 3.2, new settings are added. GlestConf adds them automatically.
The game data will be installed into <Home>/Library/GlestGame folder. “glest.ini” (configuration file) is there.
When you want to uninstall Glest, please double-click “Uninstall.tool” file in Glest32App.dmg. This will purge all data and applications.
License:
Glest program is provided under GPL 2 or later. GlestConf is not GPL. The game data is povided under the “Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike” Creative Commons license.
Notes:
- Although you can play the game with other players on the same LAN or Internet, you can’t connect to Windows/Linux. Only with Mac (Intel or PowerPC).
- Glest won’t work on earlier MacBook and Mac mini.
- Multiplayer mode is very slow.
- Set “Fog of War” on when you play in multiplayer mode using GlestConf.
- You need to set “3D Texture” on when you use new “Dark Forest” tileset to see waters. There are some Macs which can’t render the waters. In this case, it’s better to use other tilesets.
Here is the screen shot of Mac version. It’s amazing, isn’t it?
GlestConf
GlestConf is a configuration tool for Glest with Cocoa GUI. Using this, you can change the settings of Glest without editing glest.ini file directly. You’ll see the descriptions of settings as tool tips around the mouse pointer.
Notes:
- Display mode lists only hardware supported modes and the width is greater than 800 dots.
- There are fonts which are not suitable for Glest, e.g. Arial Black. They have extra space in vertical direction, so that you can’t see the whole text on screen.
Source code
You need Xcode 3.0 or later to build. You also need to place SDL, Ogg, Vorbis and Xerces framework into PrvFrameworks folder.
